Türkiye’s application for EU recognition of döner kebab as a traditional product has faced resistance from Germany. In response, Bereket Döner, a leader in Turkish cuisine, has presented an academic study to defend Türkiye’s case.
At a press event in Istanbul on 5th December, Bereket Döner outlined its research, presenting substantial historical evidence that establishes the Turkish roots of döner kebab.
“Our research demonstrates that döner is deeply rooted in Turkish history and culture,” said Mevlüt Ceyhun Tekdemir, Vice Chairman of Bereket Döner’s Board. “From Takiyeddin Efendi’s 16th-century mechanical drawings to insights from Evliya Çelebi, our evidence leaves no doubt about döner’s origins. We trust the European Commission to recognise this heritage appropriately.”
The study, titled Türkiye’s World-Famous Delicacy: Döner, examines artefacts and documents from the Ottoman period, portraying döner as a culinary icon and a cultural bridge.
Cultural Unity Through Cuisine
“Döner is not about division; it’s about unity,” remarked Tekdemir. “It’s a culinary tradition that brings people together, blending cultures and tastes in a unique way.”
Bereket Döner also announced its expansion plans, with the Döner Point brand set to launch across Europe, starting in Germany. The initiative aims to introduce the authentic flavours of Turkish döner to wider audiences.
“We’re excited to bring the true taste of Turkish döner to Europe,” said Tekdemir. “Our expansion strategy reflects our commitment to preserving and sharing this cultural treasure with the world.”
Bereket Döner’s efforts highlight the importance of recognising döner kebab as a product of Turkish heritage and its role in uniting diverse communities.
